Let’s start with the first of the TICS…. “apologetics”… I was taught to “defend” the truth… to present doctrines logically and systematically to as many people as I could assemble… and convince them to believe those doctrines, get baptized and attend a good, bible believing church. That is also what I taught others.
I ate my fill from the Tree of Knowledge and did my very best to convince others of the truth of our doctrines…. I can tell you story after story of just how that never ever worked…
Just one story… to give you an idea of what I am talking about… one of my employees was in a very bad car accident… both he and I knew that he should have died in the crash… but he didn’t have a scratch… I carefully explained to him how God loved him, presented the plan of salvation and “convinced” him to give his life to the Lord… he prayed the sinner’s prayer with me. I dragged him off to a weekend of meetings. He went forward at the altar call. The next night he went forward with the pastor’s daughter and again went forward on the final night with the pastor’s daughter… then he ran off with the pastor’s underage daughter… eventually arrested in Georgia.
Story after story… Here is the definition of Apologetics…
“the theological science or religious discipline of defending or proving the truth of religious doctrines through systematic argumentation and discourse”
We cannot “prove the truth of any doctrine” to bring people into a relationship with the Son of God…. it takes a “revelation from His Father” for that to happen… for us to truly know Him… and not just about Him.
